Four of Cups

deck: deep soul tarot

Today's card caught me off guard.

I've used this deck many times. I've seen this card over and over. However, for some reason, when I looked at the Four of Cups today, the imagery didn't immediately connect with the traditional meaning for me.

And just maybe that was part of the lesson.

Traditionally, the Four of Cups depicts a figure sitting beneath a tree. His arms are crossed as a cup is being offered to him, yet he appears uninterested, or perhaps simply unable to recognize what is being presented.

The card can represent contemplation, withdrawal, dissatisfaction, missed opportunities, or becoming so focused on what we think something should look like that we fail to recognize what is already in front of us.

The words printed on this particular card are:

Meditation. Contemplation. Reevaluation.

The longer I sat with the imagery, the more I began to understand why.

Looking Again

There is no person beneath the tree in this card.

Instead, a young but flourishing tree stands directly in the center.

On either side of it sits an identical cup.

It is nighttime rather than daytime, and a foggy cloud stretches across the middle of the tree's branches, partially obscuring what is there.

Even the ground beneath the cups is difficult for me to identify. Something about its curved shape reminds me of a crescent moon.

At first, I couldn't quite make sense of any of it.

So I kept looking.

Slowly but surely, the traditional Four of Cups began revealing itself in a completely different way.

Maybe today's card isn't about being unable to see what's being offered because we're looking away.

Maybe it's about being unable to see clearly because we're still inside the fog.

Two Cups

The two identical cups immediately made me think of the Two of Cups.

Partnership.

Harmony.

Connection.

Soul love.

Reciprocity.

Because these cups appear almost as mirrors of one another, I couldn't stop thinking about

two things that belong together, or perhaps two energies reflecting one another.

There is a tree growing directly between them.

Initially, I wondered whether the tree was separating the cups.

Maybe growth has created distance.

Maybe the path we've taken has moved us farther away from something our heart desires.

Maybe we've become so focused on growing that we look around one day and wonder:

Did I somehow move farther away from what I wanted?

That interpretation would fit beautifully with the traditional Four of Cups and its themes of disappointment and reevaluation.

Then I looked again and saw something completely different.

What If the Tree Isn't Separating Them?

What if the tree growing between the cups isn't pushing them apart?

What if it is what will eventually bring them together?

The tree is young, but it is flourishing.

Its branches are growing outward in both directions.

Although fog obscures part of the branches, growth is clearly still happening.

That changed the card for me.

Sometimes growth doesn't look like progress while we're inside of it.

We make difficult choices.

We change direction.

We leave things behind.

We establish boundaries.

We heal.

We choose ourselves.

Then somewhere along the way, we may look at where we are and think:

This doesn't look anything like what I wanted.

We may even wonder whether all of this growth has somehow carried us away from our heart's desires.

But what if it hasn't?

What if some of the very things that seem to be creating distance are actually creating the

conditions necessary for something to eventually come together?

The Fog Between What Is and What We See

The fog feels especially significant.

It doesn't cover the entire tree.

It only obscures part of it.

There is still plenty we can see.

Maybe that's an invitation to recognize the difference between not knowing everything and

knowing nothing.

Those aren't the same thing.

We may not understand how the branches connect yet.

We may not know exactly where our growth is leading.

We may not see how something we're experiencing today relates to what we've been asking

for.

However, the inability to see the entire picture doesn't mean there isn't anything happening.

The moonlike imagery beneath the cups adds another layer for me.

The moon illuminates without revealing everything. It changes what we can see. Shadows stretch differently beneath moonlight. Things can appear unfamiliar or uncertain.

Sometimes our own perception works the same way.

What looks like separation may actually be preparation.

What looks like nothing happening may actually be growth.

What looks like a missed opportunity may simply be something we weren't ready to recognize yet.

Meditation. Contemplation. Reevaluation.

Suddenly, the words written on the card make perfect sense.

Perhaps the Four of Cups isn't always asking us to do something.

Sometimes it asks us to look again.

Meditate.

Contemplate.

Reevaluate.

Not because our first interpretation was necessarily wrong, but because it may have been incomplete.

Maybe we need to stop asking:

Why isn't this happening the way I thought it would?

And begin asking:

Is there another way to see what is happening?

The answer may not immediately change our circumstances.

Although, sometimes a shift in perception changes our entire relationship with them.

When the Card Becomes a Mirror

This is also where today's card became personal for me.

I've been doing some reevaluating in my own life lately, particularly around my career.

For a while, I think I had created an equation in my mind:

That chapter ended badly, so maybe I was supposed to abandon the path altogether.

I worked incredibly hard for my education and career, and helping others is something I genuinely care about. However, after a difficult experience, I began questioning whether continuing down that path was still right for me.

Lately, I've started seeing it differently though.

Maybe an ending doesn't always mean we chose the wrong path.

Sometimes it asks us to reevaluate what that path could look like.

When I look at the two cups in today's card, I can see that struggle reflected back to me.

At first, the tree appears to be growing between them, separating one from the other.

For a while, that's how some of my own growth felt.

The more I changed, healed, and discovered different parts of myself, the farther away I

seemed to be moving from something I had worked incredibly hard to build.

Although, when I looked at the card again, I saw another possibility.

What if the tree isn't separating the cups?

What if its branches are actually growing toward both of them?

Maybe my growth hasn't taken me farther away from what I'm passionate about.

Maybe it's changing how I will eventually use it.

I don't have to abandon everything I've worked for because one chapter ended painfully. I can carry forward what still belongs to me while leaving behind what no longer does.

My path may not look exactly the way I once imagined it would.

And maybe that's okay.

The other day I wrote about feeling like the caterpillar, knowing I'm becoming something but not being able to see exactly what that will look like yet.

I wrote the words:

“Bigger than you can imagine.”

Today, they came back to me.

Maybe bigger than I can imagine doesn't necessarily mean something grand is waiting around the corner.

Maybe it means I need to stop limiting my future to the possibilities I can currently see.

There may be another version of this path that fits the person I am now better than the one I

originally planned.

I just can't see all of it through the fog yet.

Perhaps that's why tarot can be such a valuable tool for reflection.

The Four of Cups didn't tell me what career decision to make.

It didn't predict what would happen next.

It gave me another way to look at something I was already trying to understand.

That is how I believe tarot can guide us.

Sometimes a card confirms something we've already been feeling. Sometimes it challenges

our perspective. Sometimes the imagery brings forward a thought we hadn't considered.

Sometimes it simply asks us to sit with the uncertainty a little longer.

We are all navigating things we thought would look different by now.

Careers.

Relationships.

Families.

Dreams.

Versions of ourselves we thought we'd become.

None of us has all of this figured out.

We're learning. We're growing. We're reevaluating. We're doing the best we can with what we understand today.

Sometimes we just need permission to look at the path in front of us again and ask:

What if this isn't falling apart?

What if it's simply coming together differently than I imagined?

How to Work With This Energy Today

If something in your life feels stalled, disappointing, or different from what you expected, resist the urge to immediately label it a failure or missed opportunity.

Give yourself space to sit with it.

Notice where uncertainty may be influencing your perception.

Ask whether the growth you've experienced has truly taken you farther from what you desire, or whether it may be preparing you to meet that desire differently.

Remember that you don't need to understand the entire picture today.

Sometimes clarity comes simply because we were willing to look again.

Journal Prompt

Think about something in your life that currently feels unclear, delayed, or different from what you imagined.

What story have you been telling yourself about why it hasn't happened yet?

Now gently challenge that story.

Is there another way to understand what is happening?

Could something you currently perceive as distance, delay, or disappointment actually be part of your growth?

Finally:

What might you see differently if you stopped trying to look through the fog and trusted

that clarity will come as you continue growing?

Closing Reflection

The Four of Cups surprised me today.

At first, I couldn't see the traditional meaning anywhere within this image.

Then I did exactly what the card asked me to do.

I stopped.

I contemplated.

I reevaluated.

I looked again.

The cups were still there.

The fog was still there.

The tree was still growing between them.

Nothing about the image changed.

My perception did.

Somewhere in that process, I realized I had been doing the same thing with my own life.

I had looked at an ending and assumed it meant I needed to abandon the path.

I had looked at change and wondered whether I had somehow moved farther away from

what I wanted.

Perhaps growth doesn't always take us away from our desires.

Sometimes it changes the path that leads us to them.

Maybe the future won't look the way we originally imagined.

Maybe the career changes.

The relationship changes.

The dream changes.

Maybe we change.

That doesn't mean we've lost our way.

It may simply mean we're becoming capable of imagining something different.

We don't always get to see how the branches will eventually grow together.

Sometimes there is fog.

Sometimes there is darkness.

Sometimes all we can see is what is directly in front of us.

But we can still see the tree.

And the tree is growing.

So if something in your life looks different from what you thought it would, maybe you don't

need to decide today that it has gone wrong.

Pause.

Contemplate.

Reevaluate.

Look again.

Maybe things aren't falling apart.

Maybe they're coming together differently than you imagined.

Maybe what lies beyond the fog is bigger than you can imagine.

Remember the wisdom within. ✨
