The Tower

When Lightning Illuminates

There are some cards in tarot that make us pause the moment we see them.

The Tower is one of those cards.

Traditionally, the Tower represents sudden change, disruption, revelation, and the breaking down of structures that can no longer remain as they are. It can challenge false beliefs, values, expectations, or illusions. Sometimes what we thought was stable is shaken so that something more aligned can eventually take its place.

The Tower can feel uncomfortable because its energy isn't always something we choose.

Sometimes life changes before we're ready.

Sometimes something we believed was solid suddenly isn't.

Sometimes clarity arrives like lightning.

However, today's reading gave me two very different images of the Tower.

And I don't think I was meant to see only one.

The Tower... Twice

I began with the first deck and pulled the Tower.

I sat with the image for a while, noticing the tree, the lightning, the butterflies, the acorns, and the little animal standing below it all.

But as I continued looking at the card, I felt drawn to another deck.

So I picked them up, cleansed them, shuffled...

Before I even pulled anything, I looked at the bottom.

The Tower.

I literally laughed out loud. 

Okay.

Apparently we're talking about the Tower today. 😂⚡

What interested me even more was how different the two images were.

It felt as though I wasn't being shown the same message twice.

I was being shown two parts of the same story.

The Lightning Strike

The first Tower isn't a building at all.

It's a tree.

Lightning strikes directly through its trunk.

Butterflies and acorns are flying through the air, and a little squirrel stands near an opening at the bottom of the tree, staring upward at everything happening above him.

He almost looks frozen.

Honestly, that feels like a very real representation of sudden change.

Sometimes when something unexpected happens, we don't immediately know what to do with it.

We just stand there thinking…

What just happened?

Although the more I looked at this card, the less the lightning felt purely destructive.

There appears to be a glowing circle behind the tree, almost like an orb of illuminated energy. Light and tiny particles seem to move through the scene, around the butterflies, the acorns, and the lightning itself.

There is disruption here.

But there is also something strangely beautiful about it.

The lightning isn't only breaking something apart.

It is illuminating something.

That distinction stayed with me.

When Clarity Arrives Like Lightning

Lightning carries such interesting symbolism because of its dual nature.

It can be destructive.

Sudden.

Powerful.

Impossible to ignore.

However lightning also illuminates.

For one brief moment, something hidden in darkness can become completely visible.

Sometimes transformation happens that way also.

We can spend months, or years, slowly learning, healing, questioning, growing, and changing.

Then suddenly something clicks.

A truth becomes clear.

A belief we once held no longer makes sense.

Something we tolerate becomes impossible to ignore.

A direction becomes visible.

Or we realize that the structure we've been trying so hard to preserve doesn't fit who we've become.

The awakening may feel sudden.

Although perhaps the transformation that allowed us to recognize it wasn't sudden at all.

Sometimes lightning simply illuminates what has already been changing beneath the surface.

What Falls Away

The butterflies and acorns flying from the tree caught my attention too.

Both already carry themes of transformation and potential for me.

But here they are being shaken loose.

That doesn't necessarily make them lost.

Maybe some things have simply completed their purpose where they were.

Maybe something has grown as far as it can within one structure and now needs to move elsewhere.

Maybe the Tower isn't always asking:

What is being destroyed?

Maybe sometimes it asks:

What is being released?

Those are not always the same thing.

The Ground Beneath the Tower

Then I kept coming back to the base of the tree.

The lightning is striking above.

Things are flying.

Energy is moving everywhere.

But the foundation remains rooted in the earth.

That feels important.

Because when life changes quickly, our instinct may be to focus entirely on everything that is moving.

What am I losing?

What's changing?

What's next?

What am I supposed to do?

Maybe Tower moments also ask us to remember what isn't being taken away.

Our values.

Our wisdom.

Our experiences.

Our ability to choose how we respond.

The parts of ourselves that have become deeply rooted.

Everything around us can change without everything within us disappearing.

This seems to be where grounding becomes especially important.

When the sky is full of lightning, and things appear to be falling away…

remember your roots.

The Second Tower

The second card changes the feeling completely.

The Tower is still there.

However it isn't crumbling.

There is no lightning striking it.

Instead, something seems to be erupting from the top.

White fire.

Light.

Energy.

Whatever it is, it pours upward and then seems to rain down around the Tower in glowing droplets.

Gold winds its way down the structure.

Ivy grows around its base.

Then I thought:

What if the Tower isn't exploding because it has been destroyed?

What if something is breaking free from within it?

That feels very different.

The first card shows energy coming in.

Lightning strikes.

The second shows energy moving out.

Light erupts.

That could be why I needed to see them together.

What Comes In, What Flows Out

Sometimes change arrives from outside us.

An event.

An ending.

A revelation.

Something we couldn't control.

Lightning.

But what happens afterward is not always destruction.

Sometimes disruption cracks open something that has become too confined.

Something begins moving.

Something begins flowing.

Something that was trapped inside finally has somewhere to go.

The second Tower doesn't feel empty after that release.

It feels alive.

There is ivy.

There is gold.

There is light.

There is movement everywhere.

One of the phrases I wrote while sitting with this was:

“Raining glory.”

Another was:

“Flowing light.”

I don't take those phrases as promises that sudden change will always lead immediately to something wonderful.

Tower experiences can be genuinely painful.

Although within this particular imagery, I feel an invitation to consider that disruption and blessing aren't always opposites.

Something can be difficult and still reveal something valuable.

Something can end and create space.

Something can shake us and awaken us.

Something can fall away and allow something else to flow.

Gold threw the Cracks

The gold winding through the second Tower especially caught my attention.

Gold has long been associated symbolically with illumination, wisdom, divinity, and something enduring.

Here it isn't sitting safely at the top of the Tower.

It is flowing threw it.

That made me think about what happens when our lives crack open.

We naturally notice the crack.

The rupture.

The thing that didn't go according to plan.

Sometimes though experiences through those openings too.

Maybe we don't return to exactly who we were before the Tower.

Maybe that's not the goal.

Perhaps we carry something forward that we couldn't have received without the Tower.

Perspective.

Discernment.

Freedom.

Compassion.

Clarity.

Wisdom.

Sometimes the crack is where the light finds a way through.

Don't Resist the Change. Let It Flow.

One of the strongest phrases that came to me today was:

“Don't resist the change. Let it flow.”

This feels especially meaningful considering the story the cards have been telling lately.

Transformation has been appearing again and again.

So has trust.

We've explored resting within transformation.

Receiving.

Allowing.

Recognizing what has already taken root.

Holding our strength gently.

Now...

The Tower. Twice.

Maybe today's card isn't introducing a new story at all.

Maybe it is asking what happens when the transformation we've been talking about begins to move.

Can we trust ourselves when change is no longer theoretical?

Can we remain grounded when something shifts?

Can we allow what needs to fall away without immediately trying to rebuild it exactly as it was?

Can we make room for what the disruption might reveal?

The Tower doesn't ask us to enjoy every change.

It doesn't ask us to pretend that loss doesn't hurt.

It asks us not to cling so tightly to an old structure that we miss what the lightning is illuminating.

The Tower Isn't the End of the Story

I think that's what seeing these two cards together gave me today.

The first card shows the moment everything changes.

The strike.

The shock.

The release.

The illumination.

The second card feels like another possibility within that same transformation.

The flow.

The light.

The gold.

The life continuing to grow around the structure.

One card says:

Something is changing.

The other seems to whisper:

Look at what can move through the opening.

Maybe the little squirrel  standing beneath that tree doesn't need to know yet what the second Tower looks like.

Maybe his only job at that moment is to stay grounded.

To watch.

To breathe.

To allow the dust to settle.

Because sometimes we cannot see what a Tower moment is making possible while we're standing underneath the lightning.

How to Work With This Energy Today

If something in your life feels as though it is changing, resist the urge to immediately label it good or bad.

Instead, become curious.

What is being shaken loose?

What is being illuminated?

What remains rooted beneath the change?

Is there something you've been trying to preserve simply because it is familiar?

Perhaps most importantly:

What might become possible if you stop fighting what is already asking to change?

You don't have to know what the new structure looks like yet.

For now, ground yourself.

Let what needs to move, move.

Focus on the light.

Journal Prompt

What in my life may be changing, releasing, or asking to be seen differently? What remains deeply rooted within me as I allow that change to unfold?

Closing Reflection

Today I needed two Towers to understand the message.

One struck by lightning.

One overflowing with light.

One showing things being shaken loose.

The other shows something pouring freely from within.

However somewhere between those two images lives the deeper wisdom of the Tower.

Change can disrupt us.

It can surprise us.

It can challenge what we thought we knew.

But disruption is not always the same as destruction.

Sometimes lightning illuminates.

Sometimes what falls away is making room.

Sometimes the structure changes because something within us has outgrown it.

Sometimes we don't understand what the lightning revealed until much later, when we finally see the light moving through the cracks.

So when the Tower appears, perhaps the question isn't only:

What is falling apart?

Maybe we can also ask:

What is being illuminated?What is being released?

What remains rooted?

What might finally be free to flow?

Stay grounded.

Don't resist what is ready to change.

Let it flow.

Remember…

The lightning and the light may be two parts of the same story.
