Eight of Swords

In tarot, Swords represent the element of Air and are deeply connected to the mind, our thoughts, logic, intellect, beliefs, and communication.

The suit of Swords reminds us just how powerful our thoughts can be. Like a sword itself, the mind can be a powerful tool, but it can also cause harm when we don't understand how to wield it.

The Eight of Swords is a beautiful example of this.

Traditionally, this card represents feelings of restriction, feeling trapped, stuck, powerless, or unable to see a way forward. But I believe its message says something much deeper.

The Eight of Swords shows us what can happen when we begin living through fear instead of love.

Our minds are incredibly powerful. When fear takes over, our thoughts can convince us that there is no way out. We begin telling ourselves that we can't move forward, that something terrible might happen if we try, or that we aren't capable of changing our circumstances.

Before long, we can become caught in a continuous loop of doubt, worry, and fear.

Even the number eight reminds me of this cycle. Turned on its side, it becomes the infinity symbol, a continuous loop. When we repeatedly feed fearful thoughts, we can find ourselves traveling around that same loop again and again.

Eventually, the boundaries created by our thoughts begin to feel like reality and we restrict ourselves.

While that realization can feel uncomfortable, there is something incredibly empowering hidden within it:

If our minds helped create the prison, our minds can also help set us free.

The Eight of Swords urges us to examine the thoughts and fears keeping us bound. Are they absolute truths, or have we repeated them so many times that they simply feel true?

This card asks us to loosen our grip on fear, shift our perspective, and begin making space for another possibility.

What happens when we choose love over fear?

What happens when “I can't” becomes “Maybe I can try”?

What happens when instead of asking, “What if everything goes wrong?” we allow ourselves to wonder, “What if something beautiful happens?”

This card can feel heavy, but once again, the imagery in this particular deck shows me something hopeful.

The sword appears bound, but the bindings are beginning to loosen as light emerges from within. There is no outside force cutting the cords. No one is coming to rescue them.

The light is coming from within.

And because Swords represent the mind, that detail feels especially significant.

The very thing that created the restriction also contains the power to release it.

Sometimes freedom doesn't begin when our circumstances change.

Sometimes it begins when our perspective does.

How to Work With This Energy Today

  • Pay attention to the stories you're telling yourself, particularly the ones beginning with “I can't,” “I have to,” “I'm afraid,” or “What if?”

  • When you notice yourself spiraling into fear, pause and ask whether you're responding to what is actually happening or to what you're afraid might happen.

  • Challenge one limiting belief by intentionally considering another possibility.

  • Choose one small action that moves you toward something you've been avoiding because of fear.

Remember that you don't have to untangle every binding today. Sometimes freedom begins by simply recognizing that the bindings are already starting to loosen.

Journal Prompt

Where in my life have fear or limiting beliefs convinced me that I am more trapped than I truly am?

What story have I been repeating to myself about this situation?

Now gently consider another possibility:

If I trusted the light within myself more than the fear inside my mind, what might I believe is possible instead?

Closing Reflection

The Eight of Swords reminds us that our thoughts are powerful but we are not powerless against them.

The mind that whispers “You can't” is also capable of imagining “What if I can?”

Perhaps the first step toward freedom isn't finding someone to remove the bindings for us.

Perhaps it is recognizing that the light we need to loosen them has been within us all along.

Remember the wisdom within. ✨
