King of Pentacles

The Spaces Between

Today's Card of the Day is the King of Pentacles.

Traditionally, the King of Pentacles represents abundance, stability, success, maturity, and mastery of the physical world.

Kings are the outward expression of their suit and Pentacles are connected to the tangible parts of our lives. This could be our homes, careers, finances, resources, bodies, and the things we build over time.

The King has learned how to create stability within this world.

He is confident in his abilities without needing to boast about them. He can enjoy the finer things in life, but he isn't defined by what he owns. His abundance is secure enough that he can share what he has with others.

However the King in this particular image doesn't exactly look like someone sitting comfortably among his riches.

He even seems a little disheveled.

Leaves are falling everywhere. They're tangled around his body and caught around his face.

He's standing on an old tree stump.

His pentacle is resting there beneath him.

Although...

He seems completely steady… calm.

Mastery Doesn't Always Look Like Control

The longer I looked at this image, the more I began to wonder if this King is showing us another side of mastery.

The earth element of the pentacles is associated with stability, but the earth itself is never truly still.

Things grow.

They bloom.

They produce.

They fall.

They decay.

Eventually, what has fallen becomes part of the soil where something else can grow.

Maybe mastery of the physical world isn't only knowing how to build, create, accumulate, and maintain.

Maybe it's also knowing when to release, when to let go.

The King isn't reaching for the falling leaves.

He isn't trying to put them back on the tree.

He isn't even brushing away the ones that have landed on him.

He simply allows the season to happen around him.

He doesn't need to stop the change in order to remain grounded within it.

The Spaces Between

One of the phrases that came to me while sitting with this card was:

“The spaces between.”

That feels like exactly where this King is standing.

Autumn itself is a space between.

The fullness of summer is gone.

Winter isn't quite here yet.

The leaves are falling, but spring is nowhere to be seen.

We know something is ending before we know what will replace it.

Those spaces can be uncomfortable.

We often want reassurance about what comes next before we're willing to release what came before.

Nature rarely gives us that though.

A tree doesn't wait until it sees next spring's leaves before releasing the ones it has now.

It lets go because it’s time. The season has changed.

The seasons in our lives can be like that too.

We recognize that something has run its course even though we may not know what will grow in its place.

The lesson isn't always about figuring out what's next.

Sometimes the lesson is simply to recognize that the season itself has changed.

What Remains

The stump the King sits on may be my favorite symbol in the entire image.

At first glance, we could look at the stump and see only what has been lost.

Although the way the King is sitting on it makes it feel like what has ended is now part of his foundation.

It’s important to remember that when something ends, we don't necessarily lose everything it gave us.

Experience remains.

Wisdom remains.

Strength remains.

Lessons remain.

Parts of ourselves that developed during that season remain.

The past can still be part of where we are now.

Letting go doesn't require us to erase what came before.

We can release something we once held while carrying forward what it taught us.

Security Without Gripping

In traditional Tarot the King is shown holding his Pentacle on his lap. Almost as though he doesn't want to let it go. He needs to keep it close.

However, the King here  isn't clutching his pentacle.

He isn't protecting it.

He isn't holding it against his chest as though someone might take it away.

It simply rests on the stump beside him.

For a card associated with material security and abundance, that feels important.

Because there is a difference between security and attachment.

Sometimes we grip things because we're afraid we won't be able to replace them.

Money.

Relationships.

Jobs.

Roles.

Identities.

Plans.

Even versions of ourselves.

But maybe this King of Pentacles has learned something through experience:

Security isn't always knowing that what we have will never go away.

Sometimes security is knowing what will remain even when things change.

We can adapt.

We can rebuild.

We can create again.

We can begin again.

We can begin to see abundance as so much more than the material things we possess.

Trusting the Natural Timing

The hare adds another beautiful layer.

Hares carries symbolism connected to rebirth, intuition, fertility, mystery, and the natural cycles of life. And this hare is standing completely within the cycle.

He doesn't need autumn to explain itself to him.

He belongs to nature.

He responds to its rhythms.

Another message I felt while sitting with this card was:

Trust your gut.

Trust the signs.

Trust the natural timing of your life.

Sometimes we can feel that something is shifting before we understand where the shift is

taking us.

Something feels complete.

Something feels ready to be released.

Something else may be quietly forming beneath the surface.

Our instinct can be to rush through that uncertainty.

To name it.

Fix it.

Replace it.

Find the next thing.

This King of Pentacles reminds us that there is wisdom in allowing ourselves to stand in the space between.

Not forever.

Just long enough to let one season truly end before demanding that the next one begin.

Oh, the Possibilities

Another phrase that came to me was

“Oh, the possibilities.”

At first, that almost seems strange.

There are falling leaves.

A tree has been cut down.

Everything around the King speaks of release.

So, where are the possibilities?

They are inside the space being created.

Because letting go does something else.

It makes room.

We don't always know immediately what will fill that room.

Maybe we aren't supposed to.

There is a difference between looking at an empty space and thinking:

Something is missing.

Then looking at that same space and wondering:

What could grow here now?

This shows another expression of abundance.

Not endlessly accumulating more.

But trusting that release does not automatically mean scarcity.

Trusting that an ending does not eliminate possibility.

Trusting that an empty space isn't necessarily something we need to fill immediately.

Sometimes it is simply room for what hasn't arrived yet.

A Different Kind of King

This King doesn’t seem to be demonstrating his mastery by showing us everything he has acquired.

He's showing it through the way he handles change.

Leaves can fall around him.

Seasons can shift.

Something that once stood tall can become a stump beneath his feet.

Still...

He knows who he is.

His confidence isn't:

Nothing will ever change.

It's:

Whatever changes, I trust what I have learned.

I trust what I carry.

I trust my ability to build again.

That is a very different kind of security.

Perhaps even a much deeper kind.

How to Work With This Energy Today

Take a moment to notice where you may be standing between seasons.

What feels complete?

What are you still holding because you don't know what will replace it?

What has ended but left something valuable within you?

Where might you be rushing to fill a space that could simply remain open for a while?

You don't have to know what comes next before allowing something to end.

Maybe today is simply about noticing the season you're in.

Let the leaves fall.

Keep what they taught you.

Trust what remains.

Leave a little room for the possibilities.

Journal Prompt

What am I being asked to release in this season of my life, and what wisdom, strength, or experience will remain with me when I do?

What might become possible in the space left behind?

Closing Reflection

The King stands on what remains of an old tree.

Leaves fall around him.

Some have even become tangled in his fur.

His pentacle rests beside him.

Nothing about the scene is perfectly neat or controlled.

However he is steady, calm.

Maybe that's what true security eventually teaches us.

We don't become secure because we've finally created a life that will never change.

We become secure when we realize that change doesn't take everything from us.

Something remains.

Wisdom.

Experience.

Strength.

The ability to begin again.

Abundance isn't always measured by how much we can hold onto.

Sometimes it's the confidence to let something go because we trust what remains.

So when the leaves begin to fall, we don't have to chase after every one.

We can stand for a moment in the spaces between.

We can honor what was.

We can release what has completed its season.

Before we rush to decide what comes next, we can look at the newly opened space and simply wonder...

Oh, the possibilities.

Remember the wisdom within. 💜🍂✨
