Tarot Card of the Day
The Hierophant 🦋✨
Deck: Ethereal Bloom

First, I have to say, this card is beautiful!
Traditionally, the Hierophant represents spiritual wisdom, higher learning, tradition, mentorship, established beliefs, and the passing of knowledge from one person to another.
In traditional tarot imagery, the Hierophant is often depicted similarly to a Pope or spiritual leader. He sits within a formal setting dressed in ceremonial robes, often with others gathered before him to receive his teachings.
However, there are other layers to the Hierophant that resonate deeply with me: developing a greater sense of inner knowing, gaining knowledge and wisdom through experience, integrating what we've learned, and using that wisdom as we move toward our higher
purpose.
One interpretation I've read describes the Hierophant as the Fool farther along his journey.
The Fool begins with openness and potential, stepping into the unknown without knowing where the journey will lead. The Hierophant has traveled farther.
He has experience.
He has knowledge.
Now he is beginning to integrate what the journey has taught him.
I love that interpretation because knowledge and wisdom aren't necessarily the same thing.
Knowledge is something we can acquire. Wisdom is what happens when we live it.
The Hierophant in the Wildflowers
The imagery in today's card feels particularly beautiful when viewed through that lens.
There is no congregation.
No elaborate throne.
No one gathered at the Hierophant's feet.
Instead, he stands alone in a field of wildflowers.
His white robe appears visibly heavy, with a golden hood resting against his back. In his hand is a staff, but even this symbol of authority has been softened with small purple flowers blooming from its top.
Above his head is a brilliant light radiating outward.
And all around him, butterflies are flying.
There is an overwhelming sense of peace in this card.
As I sat with the image, several phrases came into my mind:
“The light shines upon you.”
“Transformation brings greater understanding.”
And,
“Your destiny awaits.”
Carrying What We've Learned
I keep coming back to the weight of his robe.
It looks substantial, almost as though it represents everything he has carried along the
journey.
Our experiences can be heavy too.
Loss.
Change.
Mistakes.
Responsibilities.
Endings.
Questions without immediate answers.
Lessons we didn't necessarily ask to learn.
Although, the Hierophant doesn't appear weighed down by his robe.
He appears capable of carrying it.
Perhaps that's what integration eventually looks like.
Our experiences don't disappear.
Our relationship with them changes.
What once felt like weight becomes experience.
What once felt like confusion can become understanding.
What once felt like an ending becomes another chapter of the story that shaped us.
We don't have to leave every version of ourselves behind as we grow.
We can take what we've learned with us.
Transformation Brings Greater Understanding
The butterflies surrounding the Hierophant immediately bring transformation into the imagery.
But today, they don't feel like a transformation that is simply beginning.
They feel like wisdom gained through transformation.
There are some things we cannot fully understand from the person we once were.
Sometimes we have to live through the experience first.
We change.
We question.
We lose.
We grow.
We begin again.
Eventually, we can look back from a completely different perspective.
Look at everything you had to become in order to understand what you understand now.
Perhaps that is one of the deeper forms of wisdom.
Not having all the answers.
But allowing our experiences to deepen our understanding.
Transformation doesn't only change our circumstances.
It changes the person doing the understanding.
The Light Shines Upon You
The light surrounding the Hierophant's head is perhaps the most striking part of the entire
card.
It radiates outward, almost like an illumination.
It makes me think of higher knowledge, spiritual understanding, clarity, and connection to something beyond ourselves.
It also makes me think about inner knowing.
We spend so much of our lives learning from outside ourselves.
Teachers.
Books.
Traditions.
Education.
Religion and spirituality.
Mentors.
Other people's experiences.
All of those things can offer valuable wisdom.
But, eventually, what we learn has to pass through our own experience.
We question it.
We test it.
We live it.
We decide what remains true for us.
Somewhere in that process, external knowledge begins becoming inner wisdom.
Maybe that's part of what the Hierophant is showing us today.
At some point, we stop simply asking:
“What have I learned?”
And begin asking:
“How am I living what I've learned?”
Higher Wisdom, Earthly Life
I also love that this Hierophant isn't floating somewhere beyond the physical world.
He is standing firmly on the Earth.
Among wildflowers.
That feels important.
Spiritual growth isn't necessarily meant to remove us from our human experience.
Perhaps it is meant to help us live it more consciously.
Higher wisdom can influence very earthly things.
How we love.
How we work.
How we communicate.
The boundaries we establish.
The choices we make.
How we respond when things don't go according to plan.
How we treat ourselves.
How we treat others.
How we use what we've learned in service to something beyond ourselves.
Wisdom becomes embodied when it begins changing how we actually live.
Finding Our Higher Purpose
The Hierophant can also invite us to think about our higher purpose.
I'm not sure purpose is always one destination we're supposed to discover.
Maybe purpose evolves as we do.
Perhaps everything we experience, learn, question, release, and integrate prepares us to
participate more consciously in whatever comes next.
Which brings me back to the phrase that entered my mind when I first looked at this card:
“Your destiny awaits.”
I don't experience those words as a prediction that some predetermined future is waiting for us.
I experience them as an invitation.
There is still more ahead.
More to learn.
More to experience.
More opportunities to use what we've already learned.
Or maybe fulfilling our higher purpose isn't about waiting for destiny to find us.
Perhaps it's about becoming wise enough to recognize our path, and courageous enough to live it.
How to Work With This Energy Today
Think about what life has taught you that you could never have learned from a book.
Consider the teachers, traditions, experiences, relationships, and spiritual practices that
have shaped you.
Then ask yourself what you genuinely believe today, not simply because someone taught it
to you, but because you have lived enough life to understand it for yourself.
Notice where knowledge has already become wisdom.
Then take it one step further:
How are you embodying it?
If you have learned the importance of boundaries, are you practicing them?
If you have learned self-compassion, are you offering it to yourself?
If you have learned to trust your intuition, are you listening when it speaks?
If you have learned what matters to you, are your choices beginning to reflect it?
We don't have to have everything figured out before we begin living what we've learned.
Journal Prompt
Think about the person you were several years ago.
What does the person you are today understand that version of you couldn't have
understood yet?
What did you have to experience, question, release, or transform in order to gain that
understanding?
Now consider where you are today.
What wisdom have you gained that you are ready to more fully embody?
How might that wisdom change the way you make decisions, establish boundaries, pursue
your goals, love, work, create, or move through the world?
Finally:
What if your higher purpose isn't something you need to find, but something you're
already becoming capable of living?
Closing Reflection
The Hierophant standing alone among the wildflowers doesn't appear to be searching.
He isn't preaching.
He isn't performing.
He simply stands peacefully beneath the light, surrounded by the evidence of
transformation.
His robe is heavy.
But he carries it.
His staff represents authority.
But flowers grow from it.
His feet remain on the Earth.
But light radiates above him.
Perhaps that's what embodied wisdom looks like.
We don't have to discard everything we've been taught in order to discover our own truth.
We don't have to remain who we once were simply because that was the person who first
learned the lesson.
We can honor our teachers.
Question what needs questioning.
Learn from our experiences.
Trust what we've come to know within ourselves.
Then integrate all of it into the person we are becoming.
Eventually, knowledge becomes something more.
It becomes experience.
It becomes discernment.
It becomes inner knowing.
It becomes wisdom.
And ultimately,
it becomes something we live.
The light shines upon you.
Look at everything you had to become to stand where you are today.
Trust that there is still more waiting to be lived.
Your destiny awaits.
Remember the wisdom within. ✨
