Card of the Day
Updated: Sep 8
Ten of Wands
Deck: Oak, Ash, and Thorn

Transformation Requires Rest
The Ten of Wands traditionally represents carrying too many burdens, feeling weighed down by responsibilities and expectations, or holding on to more than we can reasonably manage.
Often, the figure in this card is shown struggling beneath the weight of ten wands, continuing forward despite the exhaustion.
However, the little fox in this deck is doing something different.
He has put the wands down.
He is curled up in the grass, sleeping peacefully beside them.
As I sat with this image, I couldn't help but feel that perhaps this fox knows something we sometimes forget:
There comes a time when we need to put down what we're carrying and rest.
Knowing When to Put It Down
The fox doesn't appear to be abandoning his responsibilities.
He simply isn't carrying them right now.
There is a difference.
Sometimes we become so accustomed to pushing forward that rest begins to feel like something we have to earn. We tell ourselves we'll slow down when everything is finished, when everyone else's needs are met, or when we've finally accomplished enough.
But what if rest isn't something that comes after we've done everything?
What if it is part of what allows us to continue?
The fox seems to understand that he cannot carry the wands every moment of every day.
Perhaps he doesn't need to.
Putting something down for a while doesn't mean we've given up on it.
Sometimes it means we are listening to what our body, mind, and spirit need.
Transformation Requires Rest
There are two little details in this card that I might have missed if I hadn't looked closer.
One is a tiny orange butterfly resting in the grass near the wands.
The other is what appears to be a small butterfly wing resting on the fox's back while he sleeps.
They are easy to overlook, but they immediately caught my attention.
Butterflies have been showing up so often in my life lately, and I've been spending a lot of time reflecting on their symbolism.
Transformation.
Growth.
The different stages of becoming.
Today, looking at this sleeping fox with that little wing resting on his back, I heard:
Transformation requires rest.
We often think of transformation as something active.
Changing.
Working.
Healing.
Learning.
Moving forward.
But transformation also happens in the quiet.
In the pauses.
In the moments when we stop trying to make something happen and allow ourselves the space to integrate what we've already experienced.
A butterfly doesn't become what it is by remaining in constant motion.
There is a period of stillness within its transformation.
Maybe there are seasons in our lives when we need something similar.
Not because nothing is happening.
But because something is happening that requires us to slow down.
The Wand in the Water
Another detail that stood out to me was the placement of the wands.
All but one are resting in the grass.
The remaining wand is halfway into the water below, and it appears to be glowing.
Something about that little bit of light felt significant to me.
The fox is resting.
The wands have been put down.
Yet, there is still energy moving.
Even when we rest, not everything comes to a stop.
Within my own spiritual understanding, this felt like a reminder that Spirit is still working, even during seasons when we are being asked to rest.
There may be things moving behind the scenes that we cannot see yet.
There may be growth happening quietly.
There may be pieces coming together without our constant effort.
We don't always have to be the ones carrying every wand.
Sometimes we can put them down and trust that what is meant to continue unfolding doesn't require us to exhaust ourselves in order to make it happen.
A Conversation This Morning
This card felt especially timely because of a conversation I had with a friend earlier today.
She mentioned that I have so much time to rest right now.
I told her that I actually feel like that is a blessing I've been given after so many years of go, go, go.
For a long time, my life was filled with responsibilities, work, expectations, and the constant feeling that there was always something else that needed to be done.
Now, I have the opportunity to slow down.
Instead of feeling like I should be doing more simply because I have the time, I'm beginning to feel that maybe I am being called to take the time I need to rest and reset for whatever comes next.
I don't know exactly what that next chapter will look like.
But I do know that I don't want to carry the same exhaustion into it.
Maybe this season isn't about doing nothing.
Maybe it's about allowing myself to recover from everything I've already done.
And maybe that is part of preparing for what comes next.
The Little Butterfly Wing
There was one more personal connection that made me smile when I saw this card.
We have so many butterflies in our yard right now, and I've really been wanting to find a butterfly wing—or even a whole butterfly—that I could preserve.
But I don't want to catch one.
Their lives are already so short, and I feel they have a right to live them out in peace.
So I simply asked Spirit that, if it was something I was meant to be blessed with, perhaps a wing or a butterfly that had naturally completed its life could find its way to me.
Then today, I pulled this card.
A tiny butterfly in the grass.
What looks like a little butterfly wing resting on the sleeping fox.
I don't know whether that detail was intended to represent a wing that had been left behind, but that is what it looked like to me.
Considering what I had been asking for, it felt like one of those sweet little synchronicities that makes me stop and smile.
I don't need to turn it into a prediction or decide exactly what it means.
I can simply appreciate the connection.
Perhaps that's another part of today's message:
We can allow beautiful things to come to us without needing to chase or possess them.
How to Work With This Energy Today
The Ten of Wands invites us to look at what we are carrying and ask whether all of it truly needs to be held right now.
Maybe there are responsibilities that can wait.
Expectations that were never ours to carry.
Commitments that need to be reconsidered.
Or simply a need to give ourselves permission to rest without feeling guilty for it.
Rest doesn't have to mean abandoning our goals.
It can mean honoring the person who is working toward them.
If you've been moving through a season of constant effort, perhaps today is an invitation to ask:
What would happen if I put some of these wands down for a while?
Not forever.
Just long enough to breathe.
Long enough to recover.
Long enough to remember that your worth is not measured by how much you can carry.
Journal Prompt
What am I carrying that I may be ready to put down, even temporarily? How might rest support the transformation I am moving through rather than delay it?
Closing Reflection
The fox is sleeping.
The wands are resting beside him.
A little butterfly wing rests on his back.
One wand still glows near the water.
Perhaps there is something beautiful in that image.
A reminder that we don't have to remain in constant motion for our lives to continue
unfolding.
We can rest.
We can recover.
We can trust that some things are still moving, even when we cannot see them.
We can allow ourselves to enter the next chapter with a little less weight on our shoulders.
Transformation requires rest.
Sometimes the most important thing we can do is put down the wands, curl up in the grass, and allow ourselves to simply be.
Remember the wisdom within. 🌿🦊🦋✨
