Eight of Wands

Deck: Wild Refelctions Tarot

Grounded Enough to Leap

The traditional Eight of Wands is a card of movement, momentum, communication, progress, and the ending of delays.

It often appears when energy that has felt stagnant begins moving again. Things may start coming together more quickly. Communication can open. Decisions are made. What has been waiting begins moving forward.

There is often a sense of:

Finally!

Although, the imagery in today's card looks vastly different from the traditional Eight of Wands.

Traditionally, we see eight wands flying through an open sky, moving rapidly toward their destination.

There are no flying wands here.

Instead, all eight are firmly planted on the ground.

Somehow, that makes the message of movement even more interesting.

When Things Come Together

The eight wands are arranged almost like the structure of a tipi.

Each stands individually, but they lean toward one another, eventually meeting at the top.

As I looked at them, one of the first phrases that came to me was:

Coming together.

No single wand could create this structure on its own.

Its strength comes from the way the individual pieces meet.

That made me think about the things we spend long periods of our lives building within ourselves.

Wisdom.

Self-trust.

Discernment.

Boundaries.

Resilience.

Compassion.

Faith.

The ability to listen to our own inner knowing.

For a long time, that kind of growth may not look like movement at all.

We may even wonder why nothing seems to be happening.

It could be however that there are seasons when we're not meant to be rushing forward.

We're building the structure that will eventually support the movement.

Then when those pieces finally begin coming together, what happens next can sometimes happen surprisingly quickly.

What appears to be sudden movement from the outside may have been years in the making.

From Within

Another phrase that came to me while looking at this card was:

From within.

At first, I thought it referred simply to things coming together internally before we see movement externally.

However, the longer I sat with this card, the more meaning those words seemed to hold.

Sometimes we wait for something outside of ourselves to tell us we're ready.

A sign.

An opportunity.

Permission.

Certainty.

A guarantee that if we take the next step, everything will work out exactly as we hope.

Perhaps readiness doesn't always arrive that way.

Sometimes the shift happens quietly inside of us.

We realize we trust ourselves differently.

We recognize that uncertainty no longer has the same power over us.

We understand that we don't need every answer before taking the next step.

The circumstances may not have completely changed, but WE have

That internal change can create movement where there once seemed to be none.

The Waterfall

Behind the wands is an enormous waterfall.

This is where nearly all of the visible movement in the card exists.

Water rushes downward between two massive stone walls.

As I was writing about those walls in my notes this morning, another phrase immediately came to me:

What has kept you stuck.

There is something fascinating about that image.

The walls are enormous.

They look immovable.

The water isn't going to knock them down.

But it doesn't need to.

It moves through the opening between them.

Sometimes we become convinced that we can't move forward until every obstacle has disappeared.

Until the fear is gone.

Until the circumstances are perfect.

Until we've completely healed.

Until someone else changes.

Until we know exactly what comes next.

Although the waterfall offers another possibility.

Maybe forward movement doesn't always require removing every wall.

Sometimes it requires recognizing the opening.

The water doesn't spend its energy fighting the stone.

It flows where movement is possible.

There is discernment in that too.

Not every barrier needs to be conquered.

Not every wall needs to be torn down.

Sometimes there is already a way through.

We Cannot See Where the Water Goes

One of the most striking things about this image is what it doesn't show us.

We can see the waterfall.

We can see the water moving.

But we cannot see where it lands.

There is no visible pool.

No riverbank.

No calm body of water waiting below to reassure us that everything will be okay.

The destination is completely hidden.

And maybe that is part of the message.

Movement can be happening before the destination is visible.

We often want certainty before we're willing to move.

We want to know where something will lead.

How it will work.

What the outcome will be.

Whether we'll succeed.

Whether we'll regret it.

However life rarely gives us that kind of guarantee.

Sometimes all we know is that something that has been still is beginning to move.

It could be that our job isn't always to know where the water ends.

Sometimes our job is simply to recognize when it's time to flow with it.

Structure and Movement

This is where I think today's Eight of Wands becomes particularly beautiful.

There are two very different energies within the same image.

The waterfall is moving rapidly.

The wands are completely grounded.

Movement and stability exist together.

We sometimes think being grounded means remaining still.

Staying where things are familiar.

Knowing exactly what comes next.

Having everything under control.

Perhaps that's not what grounding really means.

Maybe being grounded means developing enough stability within ourselves that we can move without losing ourselves.

We can change direction and remain connected to who we are.

We can enter uncertainty without abandoning our values.

We can begin something new without throwing away everything we've learned.

We can move quickly when the moment calls for it because our foundation wasn't built

quickly.

The movement can be fast because the grounding came first.

The Ferns

Ferns grow around and along the wands, weaving living green growth into the structure.

I love this detail.

Ferns are ancient plants. They grow in damp, shaded environments and unfurl slowly as they develop.

Within this card, they give the structure a feeling of life.

This doesn't look like something hastily assembled moments ago.

It feels established.

Alive.

Integrated with the environment around it.

There is another reminder here:

What supports our next beginning may be something we've already been quietly growing for a long time.

We don't always start over from nothing.

We carry what we've learned.

We carry our experiences.

We carry the wisdom we've earned.

New beginnings don't necessarily erase what came before them.

Sometimes they grow directly from it.

The Descending Light

Throughout the image are tiny points of golden light.

Some seem to descend from above, moving through the waterfall and gathering around the wands.

There is almost a magical quality to them.

For me, they bring forward ideas of guidance, inspiration, synchronicity, and those moments when something seems to illuminate the next step.

But I also keep returning to the phrase:

From within.

Maybe both things can be true.

We can receive inspiration from the world around us.

We can notice signs.

We can feel spiritually supported.

We can encounter opportunities and people who help illuminate our path.

Although none of those things can build our internal foundation for us.

The structure is already standing when the light arrives.

The light doesn't build the structure.

It illuminates what has already been built.

Stepping Into the Card

After sitting with the imagery for a while, I asked myself where I would be if I could step inside this card.

I closed my eyes.

Immediately I knew.

I wasn't standing inside the structure.

I wasn't watching the waterfall from below.

I wasn't standing safely beside it.

I was at the very top of the waterfall.

Ready to leap.

That surprised me.

Because from there, I still couldn't see where the water ended.

I couldn't see the landing.

I didn't suddenly know what was waiting below.

The unknown was still unknown.

Yet, I felt ready.

That gave me a completely different understanding of today's Eight of Wands.

Maybe the end of a delay isn't always marked by the entire path suddenly revealing itself.

Sometimes the circumstances haven't given us any more certainty than they did before.

Something within us has simply become ready to move.

There is a difference between falling and leaping.

One happens to us.

The other contains a choice.

There could be moments when we reach the edge of something we've been preparing for much longer than we realized.

We still don't know exactly where it leads.

But instead of thinking,

I can't move until I know where this goes,

Something within us finally says:

I don't know where this goes, but I'm ready.

The End of Delays

The Eight of Wands is traditionally associated with delays ending and momentum returning.

But today's imagery made me think differently about what a delay can be.

Sometimes delays are external.

Circumstances genuinely prevent movement.

The opportunity isn't available yet.

Information is missing.

Something needs time.

Other times, perhaps the delay has served a different purpose.

We weren't ready.

Something still needed to be learned.

A foundation needed to be built.

Our roots needed to grow.

Our understanding needed to deepen.

We needed time to become steady enough within ourselves that uncertainty didn't automatically stop us from moving.

There is nothing wrong with that.

Preparation is not the same thing as failure to progress.

Sometimes the period that looks like stillness is precisely what makes movement possible later.

Then one day, we arrive at the edge.

The destination hasn't become any clearer.

But what is inside of us has.

How to Work With This Energy Today

The Eight of Wands invites us to notice where movement may already be beginning.

Ask yourself:

Where have things recently started coming together?

Where have you been building something internally that others may not be able to see?

What feels different within you now than it did six months or a year ago?

Is there an area of your life where you've been waiting for complete certainty before allowing yourself to move?

Perhaps most importantly:

Is there actually still a wall in front of you, or have you become so accustomed to expecting one that you haven't noticed the opening?

You don't need to force movement where it isn't ready.

You don't need to leap simply because someone else thinks you should.

But when something within you genuinely says ready, perhaps you can trust yourself enough to listen.

Journal Prompt

Imagine yourself standing at the top of the waterfall.

Behind you is everything that brought you here.

Below you is something you cannot completely see.

Ask yourself:

What structure have I already built within myself that I can trust as I move into what comes next?

Then consider:

What has kept me feeling stuck?

Does that obstacle truly need to disappear before you can move forward?

Or is there an opening you haven't allowed yourself to see?

Finally:

What would I do differently if I trusted that I don't need to know exactly where I'm going to trust that I'm ready for the next step?

Closing Reflection

The Eight of Wands is a card of movement.

But today's card reminds us that movement doesn't have to mean chaos.

Eight wands stand firmly on the earth.

They lean toward one another and create something strong.

Ferns grow around them.

Light descends.

Behind them, water rushes between enormous walls of stone toward a destination we cannot see.

Everything in the image seems to say:

The structure is standing.

The opening is there.

The water is moving.

Maybe we don't need every wall to fall.

Maybe we don't need the entire path illuminated.

Maybe we don't even need to know where the water lands.

Perhaps there are seasons for building.

Seasons for rooting.

Seasons for waiting.

Then there are moments when everything we've cultivated within ourselves comes together and whispers:

It's time to move.

Not because we suddenly have every answer.

Not because someone has promised us the landing will be easy.

But because we trust the person standing at the edge more than we once did.

We trust the foundation beneath us.

We trust what we've learned.

We trust ourselves enough to enter the unknown without believing we will disappear inside it.

Sometimes the greatest evidence that a delay is ending isn't that the future has finally revealed itself.

It's that something within us is finally ready to take the leap.

Build the structure.

Notice the opening.

Trust what has come together within you.

Then when your own inner knowing says it's time,

Move.

Because maybe being grounded was never about staying in one place.

Maybe we become grounded enough to leap.

Remember the wisdom within. ✨🌿💧
